I won't spoil the unlockable character, but you can probably figure out her strengths and weaknesses just by playing as her. Mario's biggest strength is that he doesn't have any weaknesses, and his biggest weakness is that he doesn't have any weaknesses (he's the all-around balanced type). Toad runs the fastest, but also falls to the ground the fastest.

Princess Peach can hover for a short time after jumping, but runs slower. Luigi can jump high, but has low traction on his feet (couldn't he just get different shoes?). They each have different strengths and weaknesses. One notable addition to the game is that you can play as either Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, or an unlockable character I'm not going to spoil. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad go after him. The story is slightly different from the usual: Instead of capturing Peach, Bowser captures the Sprixie princesses and runs away to the Sprixie Kingdom. The levels are still linear, though less so than in Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS. This is a 3D platformer, meaning it's not side-scrolling, the characters can go in various directions. Just not as good as Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is hard to top.

That doesn't mean it's bad, in fact, it's really good. This Mario platformer is less "Super Mario Galaxy" and more "New Super Mario Bros." in that it is less creative with its level designs than Galaxy and more traditionally "Mario" (meaning more grassy land, more Goombas and Koopa Troopas, less stuff that has't been seen before).
